Tips On Being A Smart Consumer
  • Before you buy a home, attend a homeownership education courses from any HUD-Approved non-profit counseling agencies
  • Talk to several real estate professionals. Check for their references before hiring one to help you buy or sell a home.
  • Don't be fooled into paying too much. Get the selling prices of other homes in the neighborhood.
  • Have a complete inspection done by properly qualified and licensed home inspector BEFORE you are obligated to buy. Who will pay for the repairs.
  • Shop for a mortage lender and compare all associated costs.
  • NEVER make a false statement on your loan application. Lying on a mortgage application is fraud, resulting in criminal penalties.
  • NEVER borrow more money than you can afford to repay: You risk losing your house and all of the money paid into the property.
  • NEVER sign a blank document or a document containing blanks. Insert "N/A" (i.e., not applicable) or cross through any blanks.
  • Read everything carefully and ask questions. Do not sign anything that you don't understand. Ask for professional helps.
  • It is a Federal Crime to state that you plan to live in the property when, in fact, you intend to rent the house or to fix and resell it.

File a housing discrimination complaint
